Kava incentive claims close today after proposal 222 began the DeFi wind-down

Kava proposal 222 passed on 5 October 2026. It ended all incentive rewards, stopped new Mint borrowing and capped Lend. The deadline to claim incentive rewards is 23:59:59 UTC on 1 November 2026.

Kava governance proposal 222, "Phase 2: End Incentives, Limit Borrowing, and Signal Protocol Wind-Down", passed on 5 October 2026. It is the second step in winding down Kava's Mint, Lend and Swap DeFi modules. One of its changes takes effect today: the window for claiming incentive rewards closes at 23:59:59 UTC on 1 November 2026.

What the proposal changed

The proposal is a parameter change touching the cdp, hard and incentive modules. According to the on-chain proposal and the parameters the chain reports now:

  • Incentives end. Every incentive reward period is now empty: USDX minting, Lend (Hard) supply and borrow, delegator, Swap, Savings and Earn rewards.
  • Claims close today. The incentive ClaimEnd parameter is set to 1 November 2026, 23:59:59 UTC.
  • No new Mint borrowing. The debt limit of every CDP collateral type, and the global USDX debt limit, is set to 0. In the proposal's words, Mint "permits no new CDPs or additional borrowing".
  • Lend borrowing capped. Borrow limits in the Lend money markets are set near the balances already outstanding.

The proposal asks users to close their positions before a Phase 3, which has not yet been put to a vote.

The vote

Voting ran from 28 September to 5 October 2026 (17:14 UTC). Of the votes cast, 92.53% were Yes, 6.49% Abstain, 0.94% No and 0.03% No with Veto: about 49.2 million KAVA voted Yes and 0.5 million No.

This is not the first try at Phase 2. Proposal 221, "Phase 2: Finalize Kava CDP and Lend Debt Parameters, Extend Incentive Claims", was rejected on 15 August 2026, when most votes were No or No with Veto. It came after proposal 215 (Phase 1), which passed in May 2026 and capped CDP and Lend debt near the amounts in use.

What it means for validators and delegators

  • Claim before the deadline. If you have unclaimed incentive-module rewards, including rewards earned through delegation, claim them before 23:59:59 UTC today. The proposal says claims close on 1 November 2026.
  • Staking itself is unchanged. The proposal does not touch staking, slashing or distribution parameters, and it needs no node upgrade. Validators have nothing to do.
  • DeFi positions. If you have an open CDP or a Lend borrow, you can no longer add debt. Watch for the Phase 3 proposal.
